Everyone's a DJ's First All Ages Benefit

Everyone's a DJ and Whippersnapper Gallery were proud to host our first all ages event on Sunday, 19 July 2009 for the benefit of East Metro Youth Services, a community based children's mental health centre that has been serving young people and their families in East Toronto for over thirty-five years.

As always, the party featured a wide range of new and experienced DJs alike, including members of the EMYS community. A free workshop was provided to the participating DJs before the event by members of Toronto's Off Centre DJ School. Stay tuned for a follow-up report on the event

About Our Partners

East Metro Youth Services is a fully accredited, community based children's mental health centre which has been serving the Scarborough community for thirty-five years. Incorporated in 1974, EMYS is committed to helping at-risk youth and their families build a better future. Its mission is to work with youth in their community to achieve their personal best through improved mental health and well being in partnerships with their families, schools, and other professionals.

Whippersnapper Gallery is a Toronto based youth art collective, and a hub for young talent. As an up and coming not-for-profit organization, Whippersnapper provides artists with an affordable space to showcase their work in a professional gallery setting. The young individuals who founded Whippersnapper are practicing artists who share a passion for the arts and strongly believe in providing a venue that will allow new artists to gain experience and display their works in Toronto. Not only is Whippersnapper a gallery, but it is also a venue for artistic, cultural, and community events.

Off Centre DJ School's mandate is simple: have fun with records! Since 2004 founder Erik Laar (AKA Steptone) has emphasized the roots of DJ culture: vinyl, two turntables, and a mixer. Students are encouraged to embrace mistakes as a way of learning and discovering new things. Seasoned teachers such as Stephen Scholtz (AKA Everyone's a DJ veteran DJ Shagz) play a key role in placing the focus not only on technical aspects of mixing, scratching, and use of equipment, but also highlighting a DJ culture component which emphasizes much more than just commercial hits. Above all, self expression and having fun are the key ingredients.

Everyone's a DJ is hosted at Disgraceland on the second Saturday of the month
